What happens if the job doesn’t work out?

In my previous blog, I talked about the decision making process in Risk vs. Reward: Should I Make The Job Change? But what happens if it does not work out?

At the end of the day, we can take all the precautions and think through every aspect of a decision and it still not work out. While a “bad move” will be less likely thinking through the questions, it happens. So, what if the move does not work out. You have options! Evaluate what the root of the problem is or if it is fixable. In the over 12 years of recruiting and Human Resource work I have done, I have asked candidates, “Did you talk to your boss about “x”? Almost 100% of the time, the answer is “no, I never thought of that.” Start with your boss or person in the company that you feel comfortable going to. If it is not a fixable situation, know you have options.

Keep these things in mind if a job change has not worked out:

  • Make sure you have exhausted all options internally before you start looking.
  • It is easier to find a job when you have a job, so do not quit unless you absolutely have to!
  • Be professional but honest about why the quick transition is occurring. (You may need to seek a professional opinion as to how to package the answer in a professional manner)
  • If you left public accounting and this is your first job outside in the “real world”, chances are, they will take you back.
  • Evaluate the reasons why the change you made did not work, and significantly vet those out in future interviews.
  • Be honest with yourself and determine what you really want so that you can find that and make the next move.

A job change is never easy, so a methodical approach is key. All this said, sometimes you just have a gut intuition. If that works for you, great! Harness that and use it to guide you, keeping these above factors in mind. Good luck in 2021!
